The Gender Of A Generation

Hello, It’s me again, Mr Know-It-All, seriously, I’ve legally changed my name to that and I’ve officially become not only a theorist but a professional listener, yeap, you probably don’t believe this but in my head it’s all true and like the great theorist that I am I’d like to share some of my views on happiness.

Happiness, does anyone really know what it is, what it’s about?, well, I say it’s not about happiness but the pursuit to getting it that keeps us going. Of course it’s unfortunate but true that in our pursuit to “The Unknown” or “The Yet To Be Experienced” we allow The Man to tell us what it is, what happiness is.

“The Man” is a slang phrase that may refer to the government or to some other authority in a position of power. In addition to this derogatory connotation, it may also serve as a term of respect and praise.”
Looking at the youth, who is the man? Well, I’d say it’s the man on stage, the same man the youth try so hard to be… They look up to him, he is Music… at least music is his language, his means of communicating the message we’re “freely” dancing to.

As we’ve kind of established that the man or at least the people the youth look up to and idolise are musicians (mostly rappers), Isn’t it ironic how the same artists they look up to try so hard to be different, some of them are living breathing examples of taking risks and being “edgy”, yet instead of living that very notion, the youth in turn try to be a copy of a copy of a copy of a COPY OF A COPY OF their favourite artist(s), the fact that many others are drawn to this artist alone in turn draws you(them) to wanting to B that artist.

“Hip-hop is more about attaining wealth. People respect success. They respect big. They don’t even have to like your music. If you’re big enough, people are drawn to you”- Jay Z

That my brothers and sisters is why we have so many artists singing about gold chains, “swag” and them being the greatest humans on Earth, of course it’s seldom true if it’s ever true. It’s all just to get you along.

Yes, having confidence and looking at the bright side and pretending to own the world is good… well, kind of… What I’m saying is lets face it, we all have insecurities and uncertainties. It takes a spectacular amount of truth from within an artist to touch on such in their music, but every song’s about gold chains and what nots… Lorde touched on this truth, we’ll never be royals and yes, she also touched on how monotonous this new shit that’s being shoved down the masses throat is.

“Everything has been said before
There’s nothing left to say anymore
When it’s all the same
You can ask for it by name
Babble babble bitch bitch
Rebel rebel party party
Sex sex sex and don’t forget the “violence”
Blah blah blah got your lovey-dovey sad-and-lonely
Stick your STUPID SLOGAN in:
Everybody sing along
Are you motherfuckers ready
For the new shit?
Stand up and admit
tomorrow’s never coming
This is the new shit
Stand up and admit

At least Marilyn Manson has that to say about it.

Yeap this is what it’s down to my brothers and sisters and worse of all, you’re all just a bunch of dancers!
I’m kidding… well, even if you were, I still don’t think it would be my place to say it… though we are spiralling out of ourselves…

Are we human or are we dancer? a question in the form of lyrics by The Killers, a question I gave a rather commonly approved yet lukewarm answer to in The Mass Mentality Of Conformity.

“Didn’t you read it in the detail, that if you’re idle then you will fail, now you want to know an answer, well if you dance then you’re a dancer”

The above lyrics were written by the awesome Band Of Skulls and within these very lyrics The Band Of Skulls subliminally answered one of the biggest questions in music.
Is that a good enough answer for a question that got all of us bumping heads back in 2008? you be the judge.

This is what we’ve become… This is what we are…

“Cleaned up corporation progress
Dying in the process
Children that can talk about it living on the web-ways
People moving sideways
Sell it to your last case
Buy yourself the motivation
Generation nothing
Nothing but a dead scene
Product of a white dream
I am not the singer that you wanted but a dancer…

Suddenly it feels like My Chemical Romance had a certain singer, dancer, diva in mind when they wrote this, yeap, she too isn’t flawless, in fact, she’s full of them, don’t let that song she sings fool you… The great John Lenon said it a long time ago and I’m about to repeat his words… you’re all fucking peasants as far as I can see. In my words, we’re all fucking dancers as far as I can see. Are we human, or are we dancer?… wait, are you still anticipating an answer? Clearly you haven’t been paying attention here. Okay. Go away. Thanks. Come back again.

About Ndumiso Mncwabe

When beautiful melodies tell us horrible things and grisly sounds tell us the kind truth. This is where life and music meet. They say music has the power to inspire change, I say music has the power to inspire vibes. Good vibes and bad vibes. It also has the power to inspire thoughts, but most importantly, for it to inspire change, it must inspire conversation. I smell music, I speak music. View all posts by Ndumiso Mncwabe
